Travel Insurance 101

Travel Insurance 101

Before you buy travel insurance, it helps to know what it is, what the main types of coverage look like, and when it can really matter for you and your family.

What is travel insurance?

Travel insurance protects you when something goes wrong before or during a trip. That can be a small hassle like a delayed bag, or something much bigger like a medical emergency overseas.

Are you a Canadian resident or a visitor to Canada?

Most plans fall into one of two groups:

  • Canadian residents travelling outside their home province or internationally
  • International visitors coming to Canada

One trip or many?

If you’re a Canadian resident, you can usually choose between two kinds of coverage.

A single-trip plan covers one upcoming trip and nothing else. If you travel often, a multi-trip plan covers as many trips as you take within a year.

The main types of coverage

Emergency Medical. If you get sick or hurt on your trip and need urgent care, this pays eligible medical costs, including hospital stays. It also gives you access to emergency assistance services.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption. Say you have to cancel before you leave, or cut your trip short after you’ve left, for a reason the policy covers. These benefits help you get back prepaid costs like flights and accommodations.

What else does travel insurance cover?

Medical and cancellation/interruption coverage form the core of most policies, but many plans add extras that take some of the financial stress and worry out of a disrupted trip. The Comprehensive Package and the Non-Medical Package, both offered by several insurers, include Travel Delay, Baggage Loss, Baggage Delay and Travel Accident benefits, among others.

Like auto or home insurance, travel insurance comes with terms and conditions. They spell out when and how you get reimbursed, and which situations aren’t covered at all.

Features and benefits also differ quite a bit from one provider to the next, and from one policy type to another. Take the time to understand the details so you can pick the plan that fits your situation.

However you buy your coverage, read your policy carefully before you leave so you know exactly what is and isn’t covered. If anything is unclear, call your insurer and ask them to explain it.
